Should President Truman use the atomic bomb?
For the purpose of the paper, it is August 1945; President Truman is deciding if he should use the
newly tested atomic bomb on Japan to bring the war to an end. You are a high ranking American
official whose opinion the President values. Write a letter to Truman to address the above
question. (REMEMBER: The US has not dropped the atomic bomb YET.)
The paper should be 2-3 pages long, typed, and double spaced. You should use at least 4 sources
(do not use textbook), one of the sources should be a primary (original, from the time period)
source. Use specific facts and information from your sources to support your argument. The
paper is due

Guidelines:

Parenthetical citations must be used. (MLA style) If you do not have any citations you are
either plagiarizing or not using any specific info from sources, either way that is improper.
A bibliography or works cited page must be included.
Internet sources listed on the bibliography must have more than a web address. (No
Wikipedia)
Any quotations should be purposeful and used to emphasize your points – do not include
long quotes to make your paper look longer.
If your quote is longer than three lines, cut it, or put it in block form (single spaced, indent
left margin for every line).
The format is just to write freely in first person and keep to the time period, please adhere to
formal writing procedures.
