English 121 ~ King Rhetorical Analysis Essay Guidelines (150 points) This assignment calls upon the critical reading skills you have been developing not only in your English class but in all of your college courses. Remember, your number one job as a college student is to read, and to read more than what is required of you in your courses. You should be developing a feel for the kinds of questions to ask of a reading based upon content, context, and application. For this assignment you will need to rhetorically analyze one of three essays: Adam Gopnik’s “The Caging of America,” Steven Pinker’s “The Dangers of Worrying about Doomsday,” or Laura Smith’s “Psychopaths and the Rest of Us.” Discussions of the readings are beneficial, but the online discussion forums are also helpful regarding “discovery.” However, you will need to revisit the essay you choose and ask yourself how you specifically respond to the writer’s position. Your thesis will be about how well the writer makes his or her argument. That will constitute your analytical opinion. So for this rhetorical analysis, your job is to analyze how well the writer does his or her job. A straightforward approach to organizing your analysis would be to create a checklist of the kinds of artistic or inartistic proofs (see the relevant section of our OER text) you are looking for. Are context and exigence factors? What of constraints? (Don’t try to examine everything but select three or four main things to focus on.) Those foci are the starting points for the major reasons that will define your body |
