Give you first-hand experience modeling associations between classes in UML and relation scheme diagrams.

We want to capture some information regarding automobiles in the context of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Your scope is limited to:

  1. Each driver has a driver’s license number and a state of the United States that issued that driver’s license. The driver’s license number is only unique within each state. Two drivers could have the same driver’s license number, if they are not from the same state.

    1. Each licensed driver has a last name.

    2. Each licensed driver has a first name.

    3. We are not going to assume that the name of the driver is unique.

  2. We want to make sure that the clerk entering the information about licensed drivers never inputs an invalid state name.

    1. Each state is identified by a two-character state code. For instance, California is CA, Washington is WA.

    2. Each state also has a unique name, which is always longer than the state code. It is up to you which one to use for the primary key.

  3. A car has a unique Vehicle Identification Number issued to it which identifies that vehicle. In our work, we term this an “external key” because an external agency issues this ID.

  4. A car also has a make, and year.

    1. The make, or manufacturer, is limited to several possible values like

‘Toyota’, ‘Chevrolet’, ‘Mercedes Benz’, and so forth.

    2. Here again, we want to be sure that no one can enter an invalid make

      for a vehicle.

  5. A car may have an owner. The owner must be a licensed driver.

    1. We are only going to track the current owner of the vehicle.

    2. I have been told that California allows multiple owners to appear on one pink slip. For our purposes, we will ignore that annoying fact

until later when we get into many to many associations.

  6. If the car has an owner, we capture the date on which that owner took

    ownership of that vehicle.

a. Try to think of a way to make sure that you do not have to have any

optional attributes in car.

  1. Using diagrams.net, develop the corresponding relation scheme diagram.

a. Note, you can put both diagrams into one .drawio file if you like. Use the “+” button at the bottom of the window to add a fresh page. Double-clicking the named tab at the bottom allows you to rename the page.
