Kate was pleased to know that, in her new post, she would have access to email, as she was keen to make the most of the technology available in the company. However, she soon found herself in difficulties. This was because she received a large number of emails and tried very hard to respond more or less immediately to them all. This put her under immense pressure and she was starting to feel very stressed. It was only after a helpful supervision session with her line manager that she managed to find a way of coping. She was taught that she had to treat emails like any other aspect of her work and therefore had to prioritize, leaving some emails for a while before replying (and often finding that things resolved themselves in the meantime anyway) and not replying to others at all (it came as a relief to her to realize that not all emails necessarily need a reply).
