Observing communication
This is an exercise that can be repeated a number of times – as often as you like, in fact. It involves noticing conversations (on radio, television or in ‘real life’) and noting the key features of the communication taking place. For example, how are features like pitch and tone used? Is active listening taking place?
You may find it helpful to use a recording (a video recording or DVD, for example) so that you can listen to it a number of times, concentrating on a different aspect each time. This exercise can be a very useful tool in helping you develop a better understanding of, and sensitivity to, verbal communications.
