Philip prided himself on how much work he managed to do. It gave him a great deal of satisfaction to think about how busy he had been. He enjoyed being seen as a ‘busy’ person – it gave him a sense of importance. However, what he was not succeeding in doing was making time to plan his work, to set priorities and retain overall control of his work. So, although he was constantly busy, he was not using his time to best effect, and therefore much of the effort he was expending was being wasted. This became apparent when Philip’s line manager left and was replaced by someone who very quickly became concerned about the way in which Philip operated.
