Shama was part of a multidisciplinary team that had developed positive patterns of communication and collaboration. However, she was becoming increasingly aware that the team were having difficulty in communicating effectively with clients from ethnic minorities. She had made a positive contribution to previous discussions to ensure that issues of race and culture were not swept under the carpet by the predominantly white team. After thinking carefully about the situation for quite some time, Shama came to the conclusion that her colleagues were now able to understand cultural issues, but they had not yet learned the skills of using that understanding in practice. She therefore decided that this issue should be identified as a training need.
